My journey from curly hair to straight hair

Ever since childhood, I was blessed with long thick hair on my scalp. Since then my classmates used to call it as a bird's nest- you can imagine how curly it was!! During my school days, I was fond of, rather jealous of people who had straight hair. I was waiting for that day to come when I too would be having straight and smooth hair.

Finally, the wait was over and I decided to smoothen my hair back in the year 2016. Since then, a lot of people had been asking me about the pros and cons of getting hair smoothened. "Don't you have hair fall?" "Is this permanent or temporary smoothening?" "How much did it cost?" How do you manage it?" What are the hair products that you use?" were some of the questions I encountered. I could not answer many of the questions back then because it was the first time I had smoothened my hair. Now, after four long years, I thought of sharing my thoughts on it.

1. "How much would it cost?"

There are many factors on which the cost depends. Few factors include the length of your hair, the thickness of your hair, the strength of your hair and the brand you choose. Besides the initial cost, you must spend a good amount monthly at a salon for maintaining the texture and smoothness of your hair. I always ensured that once in every month I used to get a hair spa done. I would highly recommend you to smoothen your hair only if you are financially sound!!

2. “Which brand did you choose?”

I had chosen Schwarzkopf’ smoothening. It was the best I would say. From 2016 to 2019 I had been doing Schwarzkopf smoothening. In 2019, I tried Loreal smart bond and I was highly disappointed with it. I strongly believe that you should be very conscious of the brand you choose.

3. “Is this permanent or temporary?”

You need to understand that temporary smoothening goes off as soon as you wash your hair. Coming over to permanent smoothening, the hair you have smoothened will remain straight permanently. It will not go back to its natural form but the new hair that grows from the root will be your natural hair. Once your hair starts growing, you would feel irritated seeing your face on the mirror because half your hair would be straight and half would be curly, dry and messy.

4. “What are the hair products that you use?”

From 2016 to 2019 I was using only Schwarzkopf’ products for my hair. The product that I use were

Schwarzkopf BC Repair Rescue Shampoo

Schwarzkopf BC Repair Rescue Conditioner

Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Peptide Repair Rescue Nutri-Shield Serum

In 2019, I had tried Loreal Professional products for straight hair but I was quite disappointed. Hence I switched back to Schwarzkopf products.

5. "Don’t you have hair fall?"

Who wouldn’t have it? All of us at some point in life have to face this issue. I had hair fall from my 10th grade and it still continues. In a normal human being, loosing 100 strands of hair per day is considered to be normal. I would like to bring to your notice that when I started using Loreal professional products, I had faced heavy hair fall but it gradually reduced as I switched back to my regular hair products.

6. “Don’t you miss your curly hair?”

Well, initially I didn’t miss my curly hair. I was very happy to get my hair smoothened. Later, as years passed I started missing my curly hair but I am happy the way I look with smoothened hair.

7. “Will you get back your curly hair?”

I thought I would get it back but I now realise it is a little difficult. The reason being roughness of your hair. The hair that grows from the root post smoothening would be rough and messy- indeed very difficult to manage!! Since I don’t like going out with messy hair, I get my hair smoothened every year and I also ensure to trim the length often..

I have put these points down from my personal experience. I have included a brief review of the products I use and this has nothing to do with the promotion of a particular brand or in no means to disfavour other brands.
