The tension to score well in examinations could be overwhelming and can upset your mental health. Though the fact that it is normal to feel worried about examination remains unerring, it is always important to keep stress at bay. The constant pressure from both family and school is a well-known cause for the same. Coping up stress is easy if you know the ways to manage it effectively. Below are some tips which I used to follow back then when I was a student.
Part-1: Prepare well in advance
- Organize your study space. Keep your study table neat and tidy. This creates a lot of positivity.
- Have a proper study time. Prepare a time-table for yourself. Ensure that you stick onto it and be sincere towards yourself. Do not cheat yourself by keeping things pending for the next day.
- Identify stress factors. It is essential to point out what makes you more anxious. For example, the worry to meet up the expectations of parents as well as teachers tears the hair out. Once you identify the stress factor/factors, think of ways to overcome it.
- Avoid studying in groups with your friends. The so-called 'combine-study' will do more harm than good. Keep your envious friends at bay.
- Prepare well in advance. Advance preparation gives you time to discover your weak points. Working on your weak points boosts your confidence and prepares you mentally for the worst. For instance, you are weak in Mathematics. If you start preparing your Mathematics topics well in advance, you will get adequate time to study right from the basics and you will get plenty of time to work out difficult questions which is essential to score well in Mathematics.
- Be thorough with the portions you complete. Revise the topics which were covered the previous day thoroughly. Mere mugging up will not help you instead, understand the concept, absorb it and then elucidate it in your own words. This will not only save your time but also reduces the burden on your brain.
- Take breaks (10 to 15 mins) in between whenever you feel exhausted. Don't sit at a stretch to mug up things instead, take a break after you finish a particular portion or a chapter. During the break, you can do the following to refresh yourself.
- Watch TV
- Listen to music
- Talk to your parents/siblings
- Eat something if you feel hungry
Remember not to exceed the break time (10 to 15 mins).
- Always have a collection of previous year question papers. Try solving it out and evaluate yourself once you are done. This will help you to judge yourself and will boost your level of confidence. If you score less do not panic instead try to shortlist your flaws and work on it so as to improve yourself.
- Make sure you have notes of all the subjects written neatly and properly. Neat and tidy notes brings in positivity and increases the urge to study.
- After you are done with all the topics, start your revision. During this phase, give importance to chapters based on the weightage mentioned in your syllabus.
